Hip Replacement
Hip Replacement, or Total Hip Arthroplasty, is an option for individuals with severe hip osteoarthritis that does not respond to conservative treatment. The surgical intervention for hip replacements entirely depends on the surgeon and the presentation of the hip. However, technology advances have allowed for most individuals to now undergo an anterior approach to replacing the hip. The anterior approach is a minimally invasive technique where the surgeon will enter the hip joint from the front side without cutting through any muscle or tendon. The surgeon will replace the damaged hip with an artificial one. This technique is becoming increasingly more popular because of the excellent results it produces. The anterior approach generally allows patients to leave the hospital sooner, have quicker pain relief, and have an easier rehabilitation as there are less restrictions after surgery. Some surgeons may still choose to use a posterior approach where they enter the hip from the side and back. This surgery is still effective and helps individuals find pain relief. There will be restrictions to motions such as flexion, internal rotation, and adduction after this procedure, and we must follow these in physical therapy to avoid a dislocation of the hip. Hip replacements are very effective procedures for those in pain and can help reduce pain and restore prior levels of function. In physical therapy we follow a specific protocol to return you to full functionality. Please see examples below for photos of how we treat hip replacements in our clinic.
