Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
General knee pain can often be referred to as Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome. This is a very common source of knee pain and it typically presents in younger, active females along the inside of the kneecap in a C-shaped pattern. This pain develops as a result of weakness in the quadriceps, the inner glute muscles, or both. The weakness in these muscles changes the angle of the knee and causes the kneecap to track laterally instead of smoothly up and down. This leads to pain that is especially noticeable when squatting and going up/down stairs. This condition is very treatable in physical therapy. In physical therapy we work to mobilize the kneecap back where it should be tracking, breakup any scar tissue that has developed around the knee, and then we work to strengthen the quadricep and inner hip musculature to ensure the kneecap tracks up and down the way it should. Physical therapy tends to produce excellent results for this condition. Please see below for examples of how we treat this condition.
